Our Approach
How PEP Approaches Oil & Gas Investing
PEP’s investment philosophy rests on a small number of deliberate choices about what to own, how to select it, and how to deploy capital over time.
Development Rather Than Exploration
Exploration asks whether the resource is there. Development asks how a well is likely to perform.
Exploration drilling tests whether oil or gas exists in commercial quantities in an area where that has not yet been established. Development drilling takes place where the resource has already been established by existing wells and production history. The questions shift to how a given well is likely to perform, what it will cost, and how it compares with nearby wells.
PEP focuses on development-stage wells. Development does not remove risk: well performance varies, costs change, and commodity prices move. It does mean that decisions can be informed by a substantial body of data.
Non-Operated Working Interests
Economic participation in selected wells, without building an operating company.
A working interest is an ownership interest in a well. It carries the obligation to pay a proportionate share of drilling, completion and operating costs, and the right to a share of the revenue from production after royalties and other burdens. In a non-operated working interest, another company, the operator, plans, drills and runs the well.
PEP selected this model because it allows capital to be directed to selected wells rather than to operating infrastructure, and because it allows participation alongside more than one operator. The trade-off is reliance. A non-operator does not control operations, which is why operator evaluation is central to PEP’s process.
Multi-Operator Diversification
Reducing dependence on the execution of any single operator.
Operators differ in well design, cost control, pace of development and execution, and even a capable operator can have a difficult program. PEP intends to participate alongside multiple established operators so that portfolio results do not depend on any single one.
Operator benchmarking, comparing how operators have actually performed, is part of how opportunities are intended to be screened.
Multi-Basin Diversification
Exposure across U.S. onshore basins rather than concentration in one.
Basins differ in geology, product mix, cost structure and infrastructure. Concentration in a single basin ties results to the conditions of that basin.
PEP’s philosophy is to build exposure across more than one basin in the Lower 48. This is a principle rather than a fixed formula: allocations among basins are expected to evolve with the opportunities available and with what the data supports.
Technical Selection
Well selection as an underwriting process.
PEP’s selection process is intended to combine engineering, geology, economics and operator benchmarking.
- Engineering: expected well performance, decline analysis and type curves
- Geology: basin analysis and subsurface evaluation
- Economics: well-level economics, cost benchmarking and commodity-price sensitivity
- Operators: evaluation and benchmarking of operator performance
Independent third-party data informs this work. The decisions rest with people.
Capital Discipline
Deployment and redeployment are central to the strategy.
The model is built around disciplined, continuous deployment and reinvestment. Rather than relying on single-well outcomes, capital is allocated across multiple operators and basins, and cash flow from producing wells is intended to be reinvested into additional development over time.
Reinvestment is intended to build the scale of the portfolio. It does not guarantee results, which depend on well performance, costs and commodity prices.
Alignment
Structure matters.
How a sponsor is compensated, when, and on what basis shapes the decisions it makes with investor capital. PEP has deliberately considered investor alignment in constructing the company. A portion of ownership is reserved for technical leadership and vests over time, aligning long-term performance with capital deployment decisions.
Structure, sponsor economics, and fees and alignment are among the subjects addressed in BEYOND THE WELL.
